The DHCON clinical immersion experience in Wise County, Virginia provides a rich, rewarding, and diverse clinical opportunity for our nursing students. A team of eight to ten undergrad, RN-BSN and graduate nursing students, two nursing faculty and onsite healthcare providers will collaborate to provide care in rural southwest Virginia. Students work with Health Wagon patients at the 23rd Annual Move Mountains Medical Mission - a community outreach event drawing hundreds of patients to the VA-KY Fairgrounds, which is set up to provide free medical and dental care. The nursing-led team travels to Wise, Virginia in the summer semester for a total of 4 days, creating an opportunity for RN-BSN and graduate students to complete 20 clinical hours, and undergrads to complete 20 volunteer hours, in an immersive rural setting. In addition, students will have the opportunity to explore the area and learn about local Appalachian traditions, heritage, and folklore.

Summer 2025 Program Costs
The total program cost due to Sacred Heart University is $1,330.
(This includes a $685 confirmation fee, a $45 administrative fee and a $600 program fee).
Payment Due Dates
- Upon acceptance - $685 confirmation fee + $45 administrative fee
- May 17 - $600 program fee
Payments can be made online via credit card or by check made payable to Sacred Heart University. Checks can be mailed to Alexandra Harreys, 5151 Park Ave Fairfield, CT 06825.
Total program fees include program orientation, airfare from an airport local to SHU campus, ground transportation in VA, housing in a shared hotel room, meals, program excursions, and temporary license. Please note: the trip fees cover the cost of airfare note above. If a student resides outside of this region and requires a different airfare itinerary with a substantial difference in cost, an additional trip fee may apply.
Program fees do not include snacks, major medical insurance, and all personal expenses.
