Program Description:
The PA Clinical Rotation in Uganda is open to second-year Physician Assistant students.  The global health clinical rotation in Uganda, managed in collaboration with Makerere University will provide students with the opportunity for multilevel global health clinical learning, with an emphasis on cultural competence and interdisciplinary learning in a resource-poor, challenging environment. Participants will engage in rotations at Mulago Hospital and St. Stephen's Hospital.  Principles of service-learning and collaborative, interprofessional practice will frame the objectives of the experiences, focusing on skills and attitudes necessary in clinical environments. An innovative service-learning experience will provide a platform to illuminate the benefits derived for patients and for students to collaborate and provide care while also fulfilling the Sacred Heart University’s Mission Statement “to develop students who value compassionate service and who can further translate this service into a life-long responsibility to contribute to a more just society.”

Program The Global Health Programs aim to expose our students to global health issues, cultural awareness and competence, social justice and healthcare development for disadvantaged communities in the United States and abroad through service learning healthcare programs.  Our service learning approach envelopes our academic programs with community service in combination with critical, reflective thinking.  Our intention is to serve targeted community needs based on assessments with local leaders; collaborate with the local community; and integrate our programs into our health professions curriculum.

Physician Assistant Program
By the end of the Global Health Clinical Rotation, the PA student will be able to
  1. Describe the social determinants of health in the area and their effect on the health status of the patients, families, and communities.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and provision of care for common conditions endemic to the area, and awareness of factors that contribute to outcomes.
  3. Describe challenges to health care in limited resource settings, and outline possible solutions.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes to provide culturally competent care that respects and integrates local tradition, practice and belief.

Near the banks of Lake Victoria, Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is a lively city with a long history. Before the British, the city was the capital of the Buganda Kingdom, and remains so to this day. The city sits on several hills, each housing an important government or religious building. Kasubi Hill is the home of the Kasubi Tombs, a sacred burial ground of Buganda Kings. The Uganda Museum sits atop Kololo Hill, and features a hands-on collection of traditional musical instruments.
