Program Description:
Dongguk University provides a world-class education that bridges East and West on many levels. Founded in 1906 by the ecumenically minded Jogye Order in Korea, Dongguk remains one of the few Buddhist affiliated universities in the world. NOTE: This is not a SHU program. You will need to register directly with Dong Suk University and request transfer credit from your college prior to departure.

Program Comparative Studies on US and Korea Management & Culture: The course offers unique opportunity to increase understanding of Korea management system, and Korean multinational corporations and their business culture. By using Hofstede’s Model and Cultural Dimension Theory (2010, 2015), students will compares Korea and US management style and culture. This course will enhance understanding management practices and theories between East and West by covering a wide range of academic subjects, such as “Global Economy & Business” and “Eastern & Western Cultures”. In addition students will have ‘real’ experience on “Korean Global Corporation,” by visiting Sam Sung and Hyundai and “Korean cultural” by the Temple Stay, Theater Visit, DMZ Tour and Seoul City Tour.

Prerequisite: None. You will receive 3 credits for a free or business elective
Faculty Dr. Eunsup Daniel Shim teaches MBA and upper level undergraduate accounting courses. He has delivered many technology-based courses including videoconferencing courses and Online Blackboard courses. In addition, Dr. Shim is responsible for organizing and conducting the College of Business, Teaching Forums and Executive Forums.
Accommodations You will stay in the Namsan Residence Hall.
Costs 2016 Program Costs

Deposit: You are required to submit a non-refundable $85 program fee payable to “Sacred Heart University”.  This program fee is for your international health insurance.

Billable program costs: The Sacred Heart University Student Accounts office will bill you for the following amounts:
  • Program fee- $85 (non-refundable) due to the Office of Global Affairs by May 15

  • Temple Stay is a cultural experience designed to help people understand Korean Buddhism better. Students of DISS will have a great opportunity to stay in one of the historical temples in Korea. For one night, it offers various kinds of practicing methods such as Yebul (ceremonial service involving chanting), Chamseon (Zen meditation), Dahdoh (tea ceremony) and Balwoo Gongyang (communal Buddhist meal service). Participants can find their ‘true self’ amongst the harmony of nature while staying at a temple. 
 
  • Nanta Theater: NANTA is a non-verbal performance integrating Korea's traditional rythm, Samulnori, with comedy and drama in the kitchen. The unifying element throughout the musical is the use of traditional Korean Samulnori music, which is performed with improvised instruments, such as cutting boards, water canisters and kitchen knives. Since its first debut NANTA performance has been on the road of success around the world.       
 
  • Mountain Climbing can be a unique experience for international students participating in DISS. Students can mingle with residents at Seoul climbing famous mountains such as Bukhan Mountain, Bukak Mountain and etc, in the metropolitan Seoul areas. On our way back home, a bowl of Makgoli, Korean traditional rice wine will refresh your tired body after long walk. 
 
  • DMZ Tour is an experience visiting DMZ, a symbol of the divided nation of Korea. It has drawn world-wide attention for its security as well as ecological values. Students will visit various spots including Imjingak Park, Freedom Bridge, the 3rd infiltration Tunnel and etc. Visiting the Demilitarized Zone is witnessing a major part of Korean modern history which deeply influences Korean societies and politics. 
 
  • Seoul City Tour is a walking tour program designed for tourists who want to see Seoul’s top tourist attractions on foot under the expert guidance of multilingual tour guides. There are 17 different tours available with this program and are organized under 5 different themes: Ancient Historical Culture, Traditional Culture, Modern Historical Culture, Ecological Restoration, and Traditional Markets.

Location Situated on the Han River, densely populated Seoul is the capital and largest city in South Korea. This vibrant business and financial hub and cultural center is home to more than 100 museums, numerous religious monuments, parks and surrounding mountains, markets, festivals, sports teams, and tourist attractions including the Gyeongbok and Changdeok palaces.
