Program Description:
The four-week Summer Institute for Global Business Management (SIGBM) program provides a practical framework for understanding the key dimensions critical to effective global business management while emphasizing the most pressing current challenges faced by global business leaders. The program consists of four integrated week-long modules, each focusing on a different dimension of the global business environment.  Professional development sessions are integrated throughout the program.  SIGBM participants will gain a fundamental grounding in global business management and will enhance skills essential for success after college.  This program is designed for rising undergraduate juniors/seniors and recent graduates of undergraduate programs.  Both U.S. and International students are encouraged to enroll.

Program SIGBM integrates current management theory with practical application and includes numerous corporate visits, cultural excursions, and discussions with business leaders and faculty. The classroom experience will center on case studies in an active learning environment facilitated by business leaders and faculty with strong credentials in academic research and real world experience in consulting, financial markets, banking, and global business management.

The program includes firm visits to case study firms to provide context as participants undertake a competitive analysis of a firm that includes assessment of the firm’s corporate vision, strategy, business model, leadership development practices, and corporate culture.

Weekly Schedule

Orientation
At the start of the program you will attend a  mandatory program orientation.  During this orientation you will receive information about the campus, the culture, and the expectations as a student.  You will also have a chance to meet other SIGBM students.

Week 1: Global Business Environment 
The first week of this intensive curriculum introduces essential business terms, tools and skills. Participants learn about competitive markets, profitability, risk and business modeling and engage in discussions related to business ethics, sustainability and corporate social responsibility.  During week one, the professional development component is effective communication. Hands on sessions are geared toward improving capabilities in business writing and presentations and non-verbal communication. Technical writing, presentation preparation and effective speaking in a diverse, global business environment are emphasized. 

Week 2: Global Financial Markets 
Week two focuses on the structure and dynamics of global financial markets. Participants study the primary financial markets and the assets traded in these markets The sessions will help develop a better understanding of how financial markets work from both a theoretical and practical perspective, how different financial markets interact and underpin the economy, and the increasing importance of information and technology in global financial markets. These sessions will be conducted in our state-of-the-art Trading Lab. Professional development sessions in week two include workshops on business etiquette, negotiation skills, time management and inter-personal communication skills. 

Week 3: Global Marketing 
The evaluation of global market opportunities and development of market entry and expansion strategies designed to create customer value is covered in week three. Participants will learn to assess global marketing opportunities and to develop and manage marketing strategies in a global setting. Digital marketing and social media marketing are emphasized throughout the week.  During week three free golf lessons are offered during the professional development session. The importance of golf and other activities as tools to facilitate networking is emphasized. 

Optional Trip to Boston or Washington, DC 

Week 4: Entrepreneurship and Career Management 
Week four, the final week, culminates with discussions on both starting a business and pursuing a successful professional career. Successful entrepreneurs attend these sessions to tell their stories while providing opportunities for the group to interact with these individuals and learn from their successes.  In addition, participants will be invited to a number of workshops on resume writing, setting of effective career goals, job search strategies, interviewing techniques and public speaking. These workshops will equip participants with the skills and information needed to obtain internships and full time employment opportunities.  Undergraduate and graduate program coordinators will be available to discuss options in pursuing either undergraduate or graduate studies in the United States.

Course Credit

It is up to your home institution to award credit for participating in the program.  Each participant will receive a Certificate of Participation from Sacred Heart University upon successful completion of the program.

Attendance Policy for International Students

A strict attendance policy is enforced.  To maintain visa status, students are expected to submit homework assignments, attend site visits, and participate fully in class.  
Faculty The Jack Welch College of Business faculty consists of more than 40 professors, who are recognized scholars and experienced practitioners in the business world. Faculty are encouraged to conduct research and writing and, as such, are re-evaluated every five years to ensure they remain current in business practices.  SIGBM classes are taught by a combination of full-time faculty from the Jack Welch College of Business and adjunct professors.
Accommodations Housing is included as part of your program fee

Just across the street from campus, Roncalli Hall houses over 400 residential students in a suite -style building. Roncalli Hall is a great environment for students to get to know each other and prepare for academic success.  You can take a virtual tour of Roncalli Hall here.

Building Amenities include a common lounge space and shared kitchen on every floor, as well as vending machines and a cardio gym.  There is a 24 hour security presence at the front desk and card swipe entry at the main entrance.  With same gender room placement, suite amenities include gender-specific common bathrooms, laundry facilities in each suite, card swipe entry on each suite door, shared kitchen space, and a common living/study area with a mounted flat screen television.  With double or triple occupancy, room amenities include a desk and chair per resident, as well as a three drawer dresser and clothes armoire per resident.  The room also includes window coverings, a micro-fridge, a cable tv jack, an air conditioning/heating unit, and card swipe entry to the room.  WIFI is available in the suite and each room.  

Please note, telephone lines are not provided in the rooms.  Most students use their cell phones as their main mode of communication.

Students Currently Living in CT/NY/NJ

Even if you live in CT/NY/NJ, you must live in Roncalli Hall for the duration of the program.  We believe living at the residence hall is part of the SIGBM experience.  You will get to know participants from across the country and the world.  In addition, some of the assignments may require working in team and you will need to work on them in the evening.
 
Costs Summer 2017 Program Costs

The total cost of the program is $3,500, including a non-refundable $1000 deposit that is due at the time of your acceptance into the program.

F1-Student Visa will be issued for the duration of the program — an additional fee of approximately $80, for processing and shipping the I-20 document necessary to obtain an F-1 student visa, will be added to cost.

*Fees include: Program orientation, tuition, instructional materials, housing in shared accommodations, some meals, and program excursions.
Fees DO NOT include: Travel to/from host country, some meals, visa/resident permit fees, international medical insurance, and all personal expenses
Student Visa The SIGBM program requires international students to have a visa appropriate for academic study. F-1 Student Visa will be issued for the duration of the program.  Summer Session students are not allowed to enter the country using a Tourist Visa (B-1/B-2) or WT/WB Visa Waiver.  
  • If you are an international student currently studying at a U.S. institution and will graduate the year you plan attend the program you do not need a new student visa.  HOWEVER, you will need to transfer your SEVIS record from your current institution to the Sacred Heart University. 
  • If you are an international student currently studying at a U.S. institution you do not need to apply for another student visa.  you can attend the program with the student visa you have with your home institution.

Please note that the U.S. State Department requires visa applications to be submitted at least 60 days before the date of travel. In some cases, visa processing times may take longer. Therefore, international students needing a visa are encouraged to submit their SIGBM application as soon as possible.
Excursions and Activities This program includes multiple site visits and cultural activities so that you will have the opportunity to experience the area to its fullest.  Excursions and cultural activities during the program may include:

How to Apply In the SIGBM program we are looking for talented, motivated, and bright students who exhibit a passion for learning. There are no minimum GPA or grade requirements.

All students must complete the following steps in order to apply to the SIGBM Program:
  1. Submit the online application
  2. Submit an unofficial transcript from all post-secondary institutions you have attended
  3. Submit a letter of recommendation (from a professor work supervisor if you are not currently attending school)
  4. Submit your resume
GMAT or GRE scores are not required for admissions.  We do not require an interview to be accepted into the program.

 Please note, additional materials may be required if you are applying as an international student.  The U.S. State Department requires visa applications to be submitted at least 60 days before the date of travel. In some cases, visa processing times may take longer. Therefore, international students needing a visa are encouraged to submit their SIGBM application as soon as possible.

The Campus

Airport Information

Travel to and from the SHU campus is easy with several major airports in the area, including John F. Kennedy International (New York City) LaGuardia (New York City), and Bradley (Hartford, CT).  Trains to and from New York City, Boston, and Washington, D.C., are just five miles (eight kilometers) from campus.  The campus shuttle (seasonal) as well as the public bus system and local taxicab companies transport students to restaurants, shops, and other establishments throughout Fairfield and nearby towns and cities.

Airport Transfer Information

Students arriving to the U.S. on July 8, 2017 will be picked up at JFK Airport by a prearranged group shuttle.
