Program Description:
On this program, you will visit three different cities in China and will have the opportunity to:
  • Learn about Chinese language/culture and the political, legal and economic systems of China
  • Explore current business issues related to doing business with China
  • Tour several major cities in China including Beijing, Shanghai and Wuzhen
  • Visit famous cultural attractions (Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven)
  • Visit a number of foreign businesses (GE and American Express) operating in China

Program MGT 280 Doing Business in China (three credits) - Students will take eight-week coursework on our Fairfield campus during the regular spring semester and travel to China during May 17-25, 2020. The topics to be studied on the main campus include the political, economic and legal systems of China, Chinese Culture, and entry and marketing strategies in China. 

Course Credit

The course is open to any undergraduate student in SHU regardless of his or her major. Although the course is mainly intended for undergraduate students, graduate students are welcome to participate in the visit to China if space allows.
Faculty Michael Zhang is an Associate Professor of Management whose professional interest is teaching management and international business at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as conducting research in those two disciplines.
Accommodations When travelling in China, students will stay in four-star hotels. The hotel rooms will not have any cooking facilities. The internet access may or may not be free in the hotel rooms, but is usually free in the lobby areas. All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are included in a tour package purchased from a local travel agency in China.
Costs Deposit: You are required to submit a non-refundable $1000 deposit payable to “Sacred Heart University” directly to Professor Zhang by March 10th, 2020. This deposit secures your enrollment in this program.  Final payment will be due prior to departure (exact date to be confirmed).

In addition to the balance of the program fee and flight, you'll be responsible for the following costs:

$45.00 application fee to OGA
$25 basic international health insurance fee
$165 visa fees

Excursions
The program to China will include visits to several major cities such as Beijing (Capital), Shanghai (financial center of China) and Wuzhen, as well as some famous cultural and tourist attractions like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. As part of the trip, we will also visit two companies (GE’s research center in China and a joint venture between American Express and a major travel agency of China) and meet with business executives from China, U.S. and Europe.

Location Shanghai sits on the Yangtze River Delta on China's eastern coast, and is roughly equidistant from Beijing and Hong Kong.  Once a fishing and textiles town, Shanghai has grown to be the financial and industrial hub of China.  The city now boasts one of the world's fastest growing rapid transit systems, and is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers on Earth.  Students looking to experience Shanghai’s magnificent past can find remnants of the years of foreign occupation and its beginnings as a market town in the many museums, temples, and architecture scattered throughout the city.

Situated on the northern tip of the North China Plain, Beijing is flanked by mountains to the north and west which shield the city from the encroaching desert steppes.  It is the political, educational, and cultural center of China and the nation's most populous city with over 15 million residents.  The architecture and museums found in Beijing trace the country's history from its earliest days up to the present.  Beijing reflects China’s long and evolving history and is home to some of the nation’s most well-known and culturally important sites such as the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and Summer Palace.

Overview Upon registration for the course, you will be required to complete an application with the Office of Global Affairs. Participation on the program is dependent upon acceptance by the OGA. Following acceptance to the program, you will be required to attend a mandatory pre-departure orientation.  During this orientation, further details about the in-country course and program details will be discussed.  The pre-departure orientation will be conducted at the beginning of May.
